Ukrainian musical ethnographers were among the first in Europe who used the phonograph to record folk melodies and also developed and applied the methods of their phonological recording. Among the pioneers in this area was a folklorist, composer and one of the founders of Ukrainian ethnomusicology Filaret Kolessa (1871–1947). He pursued his ethnomusicographic practice employing the methodological approach of his predecessor Osyp Rozdolskyi (1872–1945) and also suggested a number of own innovations. Kolessa’s methods of phonographic recording of folk melodies have not lost their validity up till now.

Key words: Filaret Kolessa, Ukrainian musical folklore, methods of phonographic recording of folk melodies, history of musical ethnography.
