The paper analyzes the evolution of a Lithuanian gramophone record in the USA over the period of 1912 to 1963: it reviews the evolution of sound recording and reproduction technology, the history of appearance of a Lithuanian short playing record (SP) in emigration, and indicates major companies that produced Lithuanian records. The repertoire recorded in emigration and the reasons that had determined its choice are investigated. The paper seeks to establish why some musical genres were recorded more frequently than others and which performers left distinctive trace in the history of emigration records. Major areas of musical life in emigration are reviewed, and the factors that contributed to the formation of national identity in emigration are brought out. KEY WORDS:  a gramophone record, sound records, emigration, the USA, Lithuanian repertoire, Lithuanian music, history of music.
